Ken Orloff of Orloff Consulting called AirCrafters
in November of 2001. He had been working on his Lancair-IVP for nine years and was
very motivated to complete it as quickly as possible. We brought his project back to
our facility and went to work.
Nearly all of the hydraulic installation needed to be redone. The cabin
windows had all been damaged and needed to be replaced. The instrument panel was
largely built, but there were no wiring diagrams or schematics, so AirCrafters created those
to establish an electrical baseline. The rear pressure bulkhead was strengthened
by addition of a shear web across its back, and the elevator pushrod pass-throughs were rebuilt
using u-joint units from Mike Custard. A custom aileron bellcrank pressure box was
fabricated on each side of the fuselage interior. The firewall-forward package was
installed, custom stainless exhaust tunnel guards fabricated, and the electric prop de-ice
system made to work. Nearly everything has been installed into the lower fuselage
half. The upper cabin and all new windows have just been bonded in.
As of the end of June, first flight is scheduled for the end of September or early October.
